Photography Tour Overview:
The crowds have gone home, there is abundant and accessible wildlife, and all is peaceful in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks as another winter takes its course. This is a crisp, pristine and quiet time of year in the park. Ideal conditions for a winter photo tour on which to point your camera at Yellowstone icons such as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Lamar Valley, plus wildlife including Elk, Bison, Bighorn Sheep, Pronghorn Antelope and Coyote. All this and the majestic Grand Teton national park peaks plus Photoshop sessions. Macro, landscape and wildlife. As with all of our photography tours, early and late shooting is scheduled for each day.

Our itinerary . . .
But first things first! We suggest that you set your camera's clock to the local time, as your images will then synchronize with the times in our included photo tour field notes.

Days 1, 2 + 3  |  Yellowstone National Park
Our small group will gather at 11:30 am, and we'll kick things off with the included lunch. On route to Gardiner we'll pause to photograph Montana winter scenes including a detour along the old Yellowstone road. Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer and Elk sightings become increasingly frequent as we approach Gardiner, so have a longer lens at the ready. After hotel check-in, light and time permitting, we'll explore the spots outside the Yellowstone National Park that wildlife frequents.
During our stay in Gardiner we'll explore the most colorful sections of Mammoth Hot Springs, including rising steam, 'dreamy silhouettes' and wildlife as per the photo gallery link for this trip above. We will use our own minibus to photograph up and down the Mammoth to Cooke City road at a leisurely pace. It's the only road open in the park and along which we'll be on the lookout for Elk, Bison, Pronghorn Antelope, Bighorn Sheep, Coyote, Deer, Fox, Wolf and Water Ouzel [Dipper] et cetera, plus a variety of winter landscapes and more. We encourage informal evening critiques of work taken on the trip - over dinner is an option - and/or suggest you bring along some of your work to share with the group. We shoot at dawn - not that early at this time of year - and take in some free time when the opportunity permits, then eat after sunset each day.
Gardiner, 3 nights

Days 4 + 5  |  To West Yellowstone
After an early shoot and breakfast we'll get on the road in the direction of West Yellowstone shooting all day as we go via Bozeman and Ennis, plus we'll make a detour for a pair of ghost towns. On approach to West Yellowstone we take in a pair of snow and ice covered lakes, plus a mountain range that straddles Idaho. The mountain ranges provide the backdrop for some rustic cabin shots and so on.
On day 5 we'll have our own private snow coach, and armed with sack lunches we'll shoot all day as we explore the Madison River, Gibbon Falls, Beryl Spring, the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with a semi-frozen Lower Falls, Firehole Canyon, and an additional detour as time permits. Add wildlife such as Bison, Elk, Bobcat, Trumpeter Swan, Bald Eagle, and Muskrat, plus ice and snow macros, and various snow-laden scenes for another great day of photography.
West Yellowstone, 2 nights

Day 6  |  To Jackson, Wyoming
Breakfast and into Idaho for Henry's Lake photography before heading south via Island Park to Ashton. We'll make a variety of stops and minor detours for warm-light photography on the Idaho side of the Teton range. You'll find that the Grand Teton peaks are almost as spectacular from the west side, then on into Jackson, Wyoming for our 3 night stay in this old cowboy town.
Jackson, 3 nights

Days 7 + 8  |  Grand Teton National Park
Winter sun on the Grand Teton peaks at dawn is among America's best, and during our two days of photographing the park, we'll capture many a scene that would fit cozily into a breath mint commercial. We'll shoot at dawn at some classic locations, plus Grand Teton park also has its fair share of wildlife. Included in the trip cost is a sleigh ride to photograph a huge herd of Elk on the National Elk Refuge, where on previous trips we have also photographed Coyote and Bald Eagles. Deeper into the park we'll photograph Moose and Elk, stands of Aspen trees and many a scene with a Grand Teton mountain range backdrop. The included dinner on the last night of our photography tour will feature an 'It's You!' presentation of clients in action on this tour by John.

Day 9  |  Departure day
Another great sunrise if weather permits, and back to Jackson for hot breakfasts. 11 a.m. departures onwards from Jackson airport are recommended.
