Photography Tour Overview: The fabled ‘Emerald Isle’
with its unique culture, friendly people, and ‘quaint to the magnificent’
landscape is a special place to photograph. In many remote un-spoilt parts it’s
a nation that still clings to the past, and that spells 'photography'! Ireland,
as you'll discover for yourself with the help of photographer and guide John
Baker, is unique because of all these things and much more besides. We’ll cover
all Ireland, north and south, in our own unique Travel Images way. Point your
lens at the Mountains of Mourne, Antrim coast, Giants Causeway, the Donegal
peninsula, Connemara, Galway harbor, Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle peninsula, the
Gap of Dunloe, Rock of Cashel, Glendalough, central Dublin, castles and at many
spots along the Wild Atlantic Way et cetera. As with all of our photography tours, early and late shooting is scheduled for each day.

Our
itinerary . . .
But first things first! We suggest that you set your camera's clock to the local time, as your images will then synchronize with the times in our included photo tour
field notes.
Day 1 |
Broad Meadow River Estuary and Howth Head
Our small group will gather at the gateway hotel 10:30 am, and we'll kick things
off with introductions and then on out for our first photography stop alongside the
Broad Meadow River estuary. We'll take the included first day lunch shortly
after, followed by Howth Head where the subjects we'll photograph include a lighthouse;
views out onto the Irish Sea with passing ferry ships; a derelict abbey with a
view; Ireland's Eye; and a picturesque harbour
with its' own lighthouse et cetera. Dinner at our hotel after a short break.
Near Dublin Airport, 1 night
Days 2 + 3 | Mountains of Mourne, County Down
Sunrise back at Broad Meadow River estuary this morning, then following breakfast we'll turn north and head for the Mountains of Mourne in County Down.
As is typical on our photography tours we have detours scheduled to include a
cross-section of Irish landscape plus a harbor, lighthouse, a dolmen and any serendipitous
events that frequently happen whenever we take the road less traveled. On via Newry as we cross into Northern Ireland, and on
into the heart of the Mountains of Mourne shooting as we go. Our two-night base
is near Newcastle.
On day 3, we'll shoot the first light on the Mourne mountains, then following breakfast we'll slowly explore the
slopes and back lanes that skirt the Mournes where stone walls, white-washed
cottages, yellow Gorse, sheep and mountains combine for an eclectic variety of interesting studies.
During dinner tonight we'll have the company of one of County Down's most
infectious ladies . . . with an accent you might be barely able to discern!
Near Newcastle, 2 nights
Day 4 | The Antrim Coast
and Dunluce Castle
Our last look at the Mountains of Mourne this morning prior to going directly north via
a Bronte sister connection, Banbridge, and Ballymena to Cushendun where we’ll join the Antrim coast.
You'll have a harbor, boats and reflections to shoot prior to us taking an
incredibly scenic, and narrow, coast road . . . it's where the best shots are to
be found. We'll take a slow ride for a variety of coastal images plus wild
Bluebells, sheep, cliffs and hopefully a friendly farmer. Late light is
scheduled for
Dunluce Castle
. . . a foreboding but magnificently situated
cliff-top structure with a history going back to the 13th century..
Portrush, 1 night
Days 5 + 6 | The Giants Causeway and County Donegal
The pursuit of early light on day 5 will see us at the
Giants Causeway which is the location of the
large collection of ocean-situated hexagonal rock formations you've longed to photograph!
Today we head in a southwest direction to Donegal, but not before we've traveled
a short distance eastwards for a rope bridge with magnificent cliff scenes, a
pretty harbor, a beach exploration, and the
store at the Bushmills distillery. Dunluce castle will get a second look today
too. By-mid afternoon we'll be on our way southwestwards to our new
two-night home near Donegal.
Day 6 will see us exploring farm scenes, thatched cottages, bird life, country
lanes, harbor scenes, ocean cliffs, peat production out on the moors, and much
more. County Donegal, it doesn't get more rustically Irish than this! The photogenic Celtic remnants of
Glencolmcille will round off the day’s image-filled excursion, and as with every
Travel Images day, we'll photograph much more besides.
Killybegs, 2 nights
Days 7 + 8 | The Connemara Mountains
South on day 7 via Ballyshannon to County Sligo where our first detour takes us
past nesting swans and onto a small peninsula with a harbor, cliffs, birds in
flight and a 'newer' castle. Further south we'll explore the domain of poet W.
B. Yeats, including an historic Celtic cross, country scenes, a lake, and a
waterfall. Then a road trip via Westport to the Eriff River Valley which is our
doorway to the rugged grandeur of Connemara. For those willing, we’ll take a
late light drive overlooking the bog that
Alcock and Brown landed in following the first ever transatlantic flight in
1919. There is a nice image as the sun sets over the Atlantic ocean here.
On day 8 we'll get intimate with the Connemara mountains including the Twelve Bens, Tudor-Gothic Kylemore
Abbey, a lake, more peat, and a waterfall where we may see Salmon making their
way upstream.
Clifden, 2 nights
Day 9 | Galway and the Cliffs of Moher
We'll shoot prior to breakfast, then Irish bogs, a boulder-strewn landscape,
harbors, boats and old bridges line our drive to remote Roundstone. We then take
in a couple of John Wayne, 'Quiet man' scenes as we head for Galway and the
collection of Mute Swans. To County Clare to photograph a square castle, volcanic 'Burren'
landscapes and more. Dinner in a typical Irish pub before we head to the Cliffs
of Moher for the last hour of light.
Near Doolin, 1 night
Days 10, 11 + 12 | County Kerry
We’ll take in more of the Doolin region including the Poulnabrone Dolmen and an
old manor house prior to heading off southwards with stops along the way for the
Irish landscape and pub signs. On to the Shannon estuary for a ferry ride over
to County Killarney and on to County Kerry which one could consider the most
‘Irish’ of Ireland's counties, and a place where the ‘rush hour’ is something of
another time and place. While spending three nights near Killarney, one day will
be given to exploring the extremely photogenic Dingle Peninsula where the movie
‘Ryan's Daughter’ was filmed. Another day will be taken up with the Killarney Lakes, Moll's Gap,
a detour into a remote location, and the Gap of Dunloe. The day will also include images of the MacGillycuddy’s
Reeks mountain range, Ireland's highest.
Near Killarney, 3 nights
Day 13 | Cashel and Glendalough
After 'mopping up' in the Killarney region with a visit to Muckross Abbey - horse-drawn jaunting carts frequent the area - we'll turn northeastwards stopping for green, rolling landscapes et cetera. The highlight of the day will be in County Tipperary
- seriously, it's not that far! - at Cashel. The
10th century
Rock of Cashel is both historic and photogenic, and we'll spend up to two hours around this spectacular site. On to the Wicklow mountains where the early medieval monastic settlement of Glendalough and Upper Lake are 'tucked away' in a fertile valley.
Glendalough, 1 night
Day 14 | Glendalough and Dublin
We'll shoot Glendalough's monastic remnants and nearby lake before
breakfast, then on over the Wicklow moors via a waterfall, a series of moody
moorland shots and Glencree. On to Dublin for a multi-hour 'photostrollabout' taking in the likes of the Liffey River,
a pair of bridges, Temple Bar, Trinity College where the Book of Kells
is on display, and St. Stephen's Green complete with an array of Dublin's
colored doors. The included dinner on the last night of our photography tour will feature an 'It's You!' presentation of clients in action on this tour by John.
Near Dublin Airport, 1 night
Day 15 | Departure day
As there isn't any photography scheduled for the day of departure on this trip, your flight home can be arranged for any time today. Transport to the airport is included unless you’re staying on for a day or more.
