Photography Tour Overview: The Canadian Rockies are part of a ‘backbone’ of mountains that run from New Mexico all the way to Alaska, but the stretch shared by the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia are among the most accessible and spectacular. John Baker has been leading photography tours to the region since 1989, and knows the obvious and not-so-obvious spots that Jasper, Banff, and Yoho National Parks have to offer. That, along with a thorough knowledge of where to be when the light is at its best is a combination that yields high quality images . . . the rest is down to you, but John will be on hand to help with the technical side too. High elevations in the summer are the place to shoot wildflowers in both wide expanse and macro modes. Add to the mix waterfalls, sunrise and sunset photography, plus the ever changing light amid mountain ranges that are sporadically graced by Elk, Bear, Bighorn Sheep and Coyote et cetera, and you have a memorable photography tour.
As with all of our photography tours, early and late shooting is scheduled for each day.

Our
itinerary . . .
But first things first! We suggest that you set your camera's clock to the local time, as your images will then synchronize with the times in our included photo tour
field notes.
Day 1 |
To Banff National Park Our small group will gather late morning at our
gateway hotel, and we'll
kick things off with the included lunch. After lunch we'll photograph the spectacular Calgary
skyline, then make our way westwards to Banff for our hotel check-in. We'll shoot
the late light at a nearby body of water where customarily we capture wonderful
reflections.
Banff, 1 night
Days 2, 3 + 4 | Icefields Parkway, Jasper National Park and Spirit Island
After a sunrise shoot and breakfast, we'll slowly coast the Bow Valley Parkway
in search of wildlife where Elk are the most visible. Our journey north on the Icefields Parkway
will, as always, be peppered with a large variety of images including lakes,
waterfalls, wildlife, glaciers and mountain ranges. A ride out onto the
Columbia Glacier is optional. Then onto Jasper as the last light of the day fades.
We’ll spend the next two days composing images of lakes and mountains at sunrise
and sunset, plus you can count on plenty of wildlife including Elk and Bighorn
Sheep. We practice deliberate blur in healthy stands of Aspen trees - you can
shoot straight too - plus take a boat trip down Maligne Lake for the Spirit
Island classic.
Jasper, 3 nights
Days 5, 6, 7 + 8 | Icefields Parkway, Yoho National Park and Banff National Park
Another early run prior to breakfast to catch the wildlife still up and about, then
off back down the Icefields Parkway, but in reverse. We’ll shoot all day as we pass through both Jasper and Banff National Parks, and make our way to Lake Louise for our four night stay.
During our time in Lake Louise we'll be out early and late, take midday breaks,
and take trips over into Yoho National Park and down to Banff. Lakes, mountains,
wildlife . . . you'll shoot it all.
Lake Louise, 4 nights
Day 9 | Lake Louise to Calgary
A lake and mountain sunrise at dawn, then a return to Lake Louise for breakfast.
With all of the Rockies's classic scenes in the bag as it were,
we'll take our time returning down the Bow Valley Parkway and be on the lookout
for more wildlife such as Coyote, Elk and Bighorn Sheep. A third and last look
at the Banff region making use of better light if previous visits were less than
perfect. On to
Calgary for hotel check-in. The included dinner on the last night of our photography tour will feature an 'It's You!' presentation of clients in action on this tour by John.
Calgary, 1 night
Day 10 | Departure day
As there isn't any photography scheduled for the day of departure on this trip, your flight home can be arranged for any time today. Transport to the airport is included unless you’re staying on for a day or more. Free transport to Spokane, WA, is available if you wish to participate in our Palouse
photo tour.
