OVERVIEW:
Experience the best of England
and Wales with an English Guide the Cotswolds,
north Wales, the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and Stonehenge
etcetera. Most folk know 'enough' about England, and it is often thought,
quite wrongly, that Wales
is part of England, but is just as distinct in it's culture as
Ireland and Scotland . . . perhaps even more so. It is a small
compact country with a great variety in it's terrain that ranges
from lush farmlands, and spectacular coastline to the rugged
peaks of Snowdonia. We'll experience Welsh culture in the form
of a farm visit, the lyrical language, and more plus the charms
that England has to offer.
TRAVEL TO THE GATEWAY AIRPORT
o It is recommended that clients arrive a day early to be fresh for the trip, and to also counteract possible flight delays.
o Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish to do so.
o When booking flights, add a day for overnight travel or two days if also crossing the Pacific Ocean/International Dateline.
o The last day of the trip is the date you should arrange your flight home unless you plan to stay on. Thank you!
DAY 1 | STONEHENGE, ENGLAND
I’ll meet your
early morning flight into Heathrow, and we'll go west on the M4
and then turn south into the 'green and pleasant' English
landscape where we can slow down for our first picture
opportunities. English villages
are notoriously charming and the day's highlight will be Avebury
which was built among giant standing stones. On to Amesbury in
Wiltshire for some rest after long flights, with Stonehenge in
the late light on the menu following dinner. The stones as a
circle date to around 4,000 years old, and were shipped there from
south Wales.
Near STONEHENGE, 1 night
DAYS 2, 3 and
4 | The COTSWOLDS, ENGLAND
We’ll take a
second look at Stonehenge at dawn prior to departing for the
Cotswolds. First though we'll point cameras at Salisbury Cathedral, and on to the Georgian delights of central Bath plus the Royal Crescent
before continuing north to
the Cotswolds region in central England for a 3 night sojourn amid the
warm stoned, rose-clad cottages.
Days 2 and 3 will find us shooting around the pretty Cotswold
stone villages of the Slaughters, Bibury, Minster Lovell and
Coln St. Dennis . . . thatches and charm abounding.
Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick castle will also be featured
during our time
in the region.
THE COTSWOLDS, 3 nights
DAYS
5, 6, and 7 | SNOWDONIA NATIONAL PARK, WALES
After
finishing our photography in the Cotswolds we'll go west
into Wales where I once lived and worked as a Photographer.
There will be many a stop for an intimate landscape composition
dotted with sheep and weather-worn Oaks, hedgerows and stone
walls, then on to our 4 night home in Snowdonia
National Park.
On days 6 and 7 we'll take loop trips to include Cricieth,
Caernarfon,
Harlech and Conway castles, the Lleyn Peninsula, Llanberis Pass,
the Isle of Anglesey via Telford's suspension bridge to
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwrndrobyllllantysiliogogogoch, a slate
mine and woolen mill, and a Welsh sheep farm. The Welsh language is
strong in the north, and you'll likely to hear me speaking it
with the locals . . . it comes in handy for creating photo
opportunities too!
NORTH WALES, 3 nights
DAYS 8, 9 and 10 | The LAKE DISTRICT, ENGLAND
The ruggedness of
Snowdonia gives way to the green, rolling Clwydian Hills today
as rock gives
way to moorland, and castle gives way to Llangollen with it's
steam trains and story book landscape.
Then on to the Lake District in Cumbria. The 'Lakes' are the most
naturally photogenic area in England and we'll explore it all
from our 3 night base. Loop trips will take us over rugged Hardknott Pass and Wrynose passes; Derwent Water;
Ashness Bridge; Buttermere; Langdale; Castlerigg stone circle
and Grasmere, where Wordsworth "wandered lonely as a
cloud". The "host of golden daffodils" will be
gone at this time, but the likes of Bluebell will handsomely
take up the slack. Sunrise photography in the Lake District is
among the best, and consequently we'll be out early and late in
search of the best light.
THE LAKE DISTRICT, 3 nights
DAYS 11, 12, and
13 | The YORKSHIRE DALES, ENGLAND
Following
sunrise, we'll 'mop-up' in
the Lake District and take a slow drive throughout the day
exploring lesser traveled roads which will eventually carry us in the
Yorkshire Dales. The Dales were brought to the world's attention by James
Herriot's books, and you'll see why he so loved the green and gray patchwork of stone barns, drystone walls and
rolling hillsides.
Days 12 and 13 will include a farm visit and Dales vistas smattered
with northern English character, sheep and thick Yorkshire
accents. As this is Herriot country we'll
explore the book and TV scenes of Langthwaite, Askrigg and the
remote Waldon Beck.
THE YORKSHIRE DALES, 3 nights
DAY 14 | To
WINDSOR, ENGLAND
We go south today,
but we're far from done as our morning to early afternoon destination
will be the historic Fountains Abbey. Then on the fast-track south to
Windsor early enough to take a break and slowly explore the
'Long Walk' leading up to Windsor Castle. Then a last relaxing supper
together near the castle.
Near Heathrow, 1 night
DAY 15 |
Flights Home
Unless you're
staying on, departing flights can be arranged for any convenient time. USA residents will arrive home on the same calendar day unless you're staying on for my London photo workshop..
If my Wales and England photo trip dates are incompatible with your own
schedule, do let me know, and I'll see if I am able to customise
the dates, or new ones, for yourself or your group.
